Camp Ayandeh 2007
July 1 - 7, Hemlock Overlook, Virginia
IAAB's second annual youth leadership program, Camp Ayandeh 2007, took place at the Hemlock Overlook Center for Outdoor Education in Clifton, Virginia during the week of July 1-7, 2007. With 49 campers and 27 staff, Camp Ayandeh 2008 created a positive environment where campers developed a personal understanding of their culture and identity and felt empowered by the experience of belonging to a community of Iranian-American peers and role models.
Ayandeh means "future" in Persian, and the name "Camp Ayandeh" speaks to the mission of the camp: to create a positive, inclusive environment where young Iranian-Americans can grow as individuals within a community context, develop and maintain a loving connection to their cultural heritage, and learn how to become the leaders of tomorrow.
Hemlock Overlook, conveniently located just outside of Washington, D.C., is situated within 5,000 acres of Regional Park land and jointly operated by George Mason University and the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. Hemlock is fully accredited and approved by the American Camp Association (ACA), which offers this distinction to camps that meet high standards of quality and safety. Additionally, Hemlock's staff had extensive experience and training in youth camp education as well as in leadership and team development.
